How can governments improve children's lives while ensuring that public spending remains sustainable? Children make up only one-quarter of today's population, but they represent one hundred percent of our future. The opportunities they receive, or are denied, will shape not only their own lives, but also the prosperity, resilience and social cohesion of our societies for decades to come.
At the same time, governments face increasingly difficult choices. Economic uncertainty continues to affect families, climate change is creating new social risks, and population ageing is placing growing pressure on public finances. In this context, the challenge is no longer simply how much governments spend, but how they can achieve better outcomes for children with every additional euro, dollar or yen invested.
The OECD invites you to the launch of its new report, Spending Better for Children Through Social Policies, which examines how countries can strengthen the value for money of social policies – improving child well-being while supporting the long-term sustainability of public finances. Drawing on new cross-country evidence, the report identifies policy approaches that are most effective in reducing child poverty and improving educational and health outcomes.
